Stop the Yulin Dog Festival
Every year since 2009, the city of Yulin has celebrated the summer solstice with one of the most horrific festivals in the world: the Lychee and Dog Meat Festival. This ten day ‘celebration’ has results in the murder and consumption of around 10,000 to 15,000 dogs. The dogs, many of which are stolen from dog owners, are paraded around the festival in tight, barbaric wooden crates and hard metal cages before the poor creatures are skinned. Some of the dogs are still alive when this happens. The dogs are then cooked to a crisp and served to hungry visitors and local residents.
Not all hope is lost though. The festival has been heavily criticized on a domestic and an international level. Everyone from Chinese citizens to avid social media users such as pop singer Sia have all voiced their displeasure with the event. With this, the amount of dogs slaughtered was decreased to as low as 1,000 in 2015.
The fight still is not over though. There still are 1,000 innocent animals being lined up for later this June, and there must be more pressure placed on the festivities. Change.org, a petitioning website, has created a petition for this festival. Currently, it has over 2,000,000 signatures and that number is increasing every day. If you would like to help even more, you can donate directly from change.org or can donate to the duo duo project, a grassroots nonprofit organization helping to put a stop to dogs and cats being used as food in China.
Together, we can put a stop to this!
